If you are a single dad and are fortunate enough to have a daughter, you know that raising her can feel like a roller coaster ride at times. Women tend to know how to relate to their daughters because of their own experiences growing up, going through puberty, and dealing with sexuality.

For dads, however, daughters can be quite a mystery. Sometimes daughters are loving and open, while other times they are rebellious and closed. You never know what to expect with a daughter and all the hormones that go along with it.

Go With the Flow

Sometimes there are things in life that you just can’t figure out and having a daughter may fit into that category, at least on one or two occasions. It is important to note that girls are especially prone to mood swings and emotional ups and downs and, as a dad, you may want to protect her from the downs.

However, sometimes it is best to let your daughter figure things out on her own. Always be a source for your daughter and let her know that you are there if she needs you. At the same time, give her the space she needs and just go with the flow.

Learning to Let Go (Just a Little)

When it comes to father/daughter relationships, you may wish to hold on a little tighter as she grows more and more right in front of your very eyes. However, by doing so, you take away the opportunity for her to learn and grow on her own (even if it’s the hard way).

Advise your daughter and guide her; however, it is important for her to learn to make her own choices and see the benefits or repercussions of those decisions. Let her know that any and all decisions she makes, while maybe painful for you as a parent, really only affect her and her life.

Show your daughter that you trust her and give her a little more freedom here and there. When she proves she has earned your trust, you can then give her a little more. In this manner, she will feel proud and responsible.

Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy

Enjoy and revel in all stages and phases of your daughter’s life. Before you know it, she will be a grown woman. Take time to delight in how she plays as a small child, the seriousness on her face as she colors, the delight in letting go of training wheels, and the fear as she gets behind the wheel for the first time.

Take your time and appreciate each and every phase, from meltdowns to sweet moments.
