The AAP released new recommendations on the prevention of drowning in young children. In the past recommendations, the AAP did not have any scientific studies that backed swimming instructions for children between 1 and 3 years old. Recent studies have shown that early swimming instruction for children between 1 and 4 years of age may prevent drowning accidents. The AAP still does not recommend swimming instruction for children less than 1 year old.
